My mind goes back to the first time I was offered a 'pensioners discount'. It was while buying tickets to a movie at the Hydepark cinema complex in Sandton. Having indeed just qualified as a so called pensioner (I was 60), I was so  incensed about being  recognised as such that I refused the discount with a "what the *&^% are you thinking?" look. . I'm english speaking, it's good manners for white afrikaans speakers who are much ones junior to  address one as 'Oom'. The trouble with it is that it carries with it the badge of age. As such  I cant stand it. Try Sue on  'Tannie'. Pieter van Tonder is secretary of the Barrydale farmers union, an immensely important part of broader Barrydale society, I'm just the hotel guy and here he along with all the other young farmers are calling me Oom..

What are we talking ?

We are talking about a discount of 20% off on midweek accommodation for anyone who doesn't care a &%$# what day of the week it is. Maybe you retired  early or something. You just need to have stepped onto this mortal coil in the year of 1961 or before.

How do you ask for this thingamabob discount thing without saying why ?

Or middle finger that was obviously born before 61  with a stonkin diamond ring on it protruding  from a Harley glove.

Where is the proof that born before 61 isn't old ?  

Try calling Mick Jagger 'Oom' even though he's 82.
