Art of the Memoir 8-10 July. Writers retreat 11-15 July.

Two acclaimed authors and writing coach's Jo-Anne Richards (Innocence of Roast Chicken) and Joanne Hichens (Death and the after parties) collaborate again in a repeat of the All About Writing memoir writing workshop that has received rave reviews . The focus is on how to plan, structure and write your memoir

It’s advice we’ve all heard: Just sit down and write your book…

Well, we at All About Writing, in conjunction with the fabulous Karoo Art Hotel in Barrydale, have taken that seriously. We’ve designed two exciting writing programmes:

The Art of Memoir weekend, for memoir writers from 8 to 10 July and a follow-on Art of Writing retreat 10-15 July is open not only to participants of the memoir weekend, but also so to all writers whether you are writing memoir, crime, short stories, literary fiction … Whatever you need, we can help.

Escape the demands of job, partner, children, household and pets, and focus on your creativity at the quintessential Karoo country hotel, where all your needs will be taken care of. There’ll be writing, music, art and delicious food in classic artistically driven surroundings. Be inspired by the vast Karoo landscapes. Spend a weekend learning the skills of the best memoirists. Follow it with a week devoted to your writing, in which two internationally published authors, with decades of experience mentoring writers in a variety of genres, will provide personal guidance. Come for both – or either.

What our previous participants said

I’ve just returned from a wonderful Memoir Writing retreat in Barrydale, held at the Karoo Art Hotel. Under the full moon and expert midwifery of the Two Joannes, we journeyed into the books we are each writing. We freefalled without a parachute, into our stories as we wrote our writing exercises furiously under an intense time constraint and then – no pressure - read our masterpieces to the group. What lives, what stories, what wise insights and courageous outsights were shared with such raw honesty.’ Merle Levin

Thank you Jo Annes for a beautiful guided journey. Thank you to all the participants who deeply enriched my life with all of your formidable stories. I learned so much. More please! Loved this group. It feels like new heart soul tributaries have been opened to flow. Balu Nivisen

I liked the constructive, helpful, truthful feedback on our assignments. I enjoyed the insights into better ways of writing, "showing, not telling"! It was great to have different ways of approaching writing, deciding what was important, and more important, what was not. I gained confidence in continuing with my writing. I was truly affected by hearing other peoples' stories, their struggles, traumas and difficulties, and the way writing was helping them come to terms with these events. I loved the hotel. The food was excellent. The early morning swims were magical. The whole week end exceeding my expectations. Thank you. Margie Adcock

The teachers were professional, prepared and passionate. I am inspired. Carolyn

What I liked most was Finally knowing through theory how to make my vignettes into stories that take the reader to that time and/or make the reader feel the emotion of the event. Momentous! 'Beautiful' weekend all round! Wendy
