4 Legends Bohemian Lounge Weekend (8-10 March)

MALAN. TILLIM. ROSS. LOEWENTHAL - A bit of literature, a bunch of stories, an immersion into great creative work, an iconic band and some Tango thrown in.

Rian Malan the writer, Guy Tillim the photographer, Lloyd Ross shifty records doccie maker, Hannah Loewenthal the dancer.

The idea behind the Conductors of the Karoo Art Hotel program is that the hotel puts itself in the hands of inspirational creatives who take over the conductors baton to create a symphony of a creative experience.

We’ve definitely set ourselves up for a dose of creative originality with Malan. Tillim. Ross & Lowenthal.

Guy in focus

These days Guy Tillim’s name  is mentioned in the same breath as that other South African photography legend David Goldblatt. His awards include the  Prix SCAM (Société civile des auteurs multimédia) Roger Pic in 2002, the Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Award (Japan) in 2003, the 2004 DaimlerChrysler Arts Award for South African photography, and the 2005 Leica Oskar Barnack Award. If you’re keen on his work try the Stevenson Gallery in Cape Town or Strauss fine art auctions . Or come to Barrydale for a walk and talk with Guy Himself

Shifty's Records

Producer, composer, sound recordist, documentary film maker Lloyd Ross co  founded  the antiapartheid record label Shifty Records that first made it’s name with a mobile recording studio out of the back of a combi, recording artists in as far flung locations as Lesotho with a message that needed to be heard in the struggle era.

He went on to an award winning documentary film making career. Through the window of Lloyd Ross’s camera lens we will travel this weekend.

Dance like Nobody is watching

Then comes the fiddle player of the Was Daar band. Fiddle player yes, occasionally, but with a real career internationally in the world of dance. This is Hannah Loewenthal. Yes she’ll be performing with band over the weekend but you can only guess what workshop she’ll also be leading in the ballroom on Saturday morning

When they are letting their hair down Malan, Tillim and Lowenthal , supported by Lloyd Ross all combine as the Was Daar band, formerly known as the Vermaklikheid Bakkery Orkes.

The various high notes of an inspirational weekend will be apparent.
